Maintain Mental Health After a Crisis or Setback

It’s natural to experience a variety of emotions when facing adversity, including anxiety, frustration or stress. Whether you’re coping with grief or adjusting to a significant change that disrupts your routine, prioritizing your mental health is essential for building resilience and moving forward. Here are a few steps you can take to maintain your mental health after a challenging event.

  • Acknowledge your feelings. No matter what emotions you are experiencing, take a moment to step back, acknowledge them and process how you feel. Consider naming each emotion and explaining why you might feel that way. This exercise can help you understand your emotions by attaching meaning and allowing you the space to process each one.

  • Focus on next steps. After a setback, focus on things you can do in the here and now that can give you positive results. For example, if you experience a natural disaster, you can call your insurance company and find local resources.

  • Practice gratitude. “Counting your blessings” can be challenging after a crisis or setback, but doing so is a crucial part of resilience. Consider naming three things you are grateful for each day. They can be as simple as your last meal, loved ones or a pet who keeps you company. Focusing on the positives can boost your mood and better equip you to handle challenges.

  • Connect with others. Engaging with your support system is vital for maintaining mental health. Call a family member or friend or ask an old acquaintance to meet for coffee. Loved ones can offer both support during challenging times as well as a distraction for when you need a break.

Navigating the aftermath of a crisis or setback can be challenging, but you don’t have to do it alone. If you need additional support, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional.
