Benefits of Creativity

Being creative is often thought of as being able to build or create art, but creativity offers a wealth of benefits that extend across personal, professional and social spheres. Using your imagination can foster problem-solving skills, develop new concepts and drive innovation that can help you boost self-expression, self-esteem, resilience and overall wellbeing.

Here are a few ways creativity can improve your emotional health.

  • Relieve stress. Creativity is a form of relaxation. It allows you to focus on an activity for an extended period and provides a calming effect on the brain. If you are new to incorporating creativity into your day, consider starting with activities you enjoyed as a child, such as coloring or dancing, to help you relax and ease feelings of stress.

  • Improve confidence.  Engaging in activities like photography or writing can enhance self-esteem by offering a meaningful way to express yourself. Creative pursuits encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and explore fresh perspectives. A great starting point is journaling. Take time to reflect on your day while incorporating positive affirmations to nurture a more confident mindset.

  • Boost problem-solving skills. Engaging in a creative project trains your mind to look differently at a concern or situation. Role-playing games and escape rooms are great examples of activities that force you to engage and find a solution. With practice, you'll likely see these skills naturally carrying over into your daily life.

  • Connection with others. Creativity doesn’t have to be a solo endeavor. Whether you take a painting class with your partner or give pottery a try with a friend, creative activities are a great way to build connections. Classes and groups can also introduce you to new people who share similar interests, which can help you build meaningful friendships.

By engaging in creative activities, you can develop healthy coping mechanisms while fostering a sense of accomplishment and purpose for a healthier, happier you.
