How To Make An Emergency Preparedness Kit For Any Occasion
September is National Preparedness Month! Whether you're preparing for a natural disaster or another pandemic situation, here is what you can do to put yourself in the best situation:
First, you will need to think about who this kit is for and the types of emergencies that can occur.
You will want to plan for one gallon of water per individual per day depending on the type of emergency. You may also want to purchase a portable water filtering straw instead of carrying water in your bag.
You will also want to consider the healthiest non-perishable food that incorporates all food groups such as nuts and seeds, canned fruits and vegetables, canned beans, canned fish and poultry, grains, and powdered milk. A can opener and utensils will also be vital.
Another life-preserving item would be any prescriptions or medications to meet the needs of one who may have an underlying health condition.
Light and communication also play an important role in many emergencies such as flashlights, and whistles. Radios and cordless phone chargers for cell phones will also be important to receive communications from credible sources. Be sure to pack batteries for any devices that may need it.
First-Aid Kits are also important in many situations, especially bandages, gauze pads, gloves, eye wash, antiseptic towelettes, hand sanitizers and many other items. In some cases, it may be smart to plan for other personal hygiene items to maintain personal hygiene such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, and hair products.
Depending on the weather, you may need to plan to have blankets, body warmers or extra layers of clothing such as ponchos and boots.
Important documents that are difficult to replace should also be considered such as your driver’s license, other healthcare cards, ATM cards (and/or cash), deeds, titles, medical records, legal documents, insurance policies, and even a list of contacts that you might need in the event of an emergency.
