Fads vs. Facts
Every year there are new types of foods, supplements and even diets that are advertised as offering the nutrients or optimum nutrition that your body needs. People will often try anything to help them feel better or lose weight. Companies that promote fad superfoods or diets take advantage of this fact. Usually fads promise quick and easy results. And in the case of fad diets, they are popular because they work, at least for a short amount of time. The truth is, most fad diets are nearly impossible to stick to long-term. Most people will likely gain the weight back and some may gain more weight than they started with.
How can you spot a fad?
Do you have to buy certain foods at a special store?
Do you have to eliminate certain foods altogether?
Do the expected results seem unrealistic?
Are there unbiased studies to support claims?
Is this plan temporary?
When in doubt about following a new meal plan or adding a superfood, check with your doctor or Registered Dietician. If your employer offers health coaching, contacting a licensed Health Coach is another great place to start.
