Tips to Eat Healthy While on a Budget
It can be easy to shy away from healthy eating when trying to stick to a budget, but there are many ways to save money without it having an impact on health!
Plan! Plan what meals and snacks you/your family will have throughout the week and make a grocery list. Planning ahead can reduce impulse buys. For less waste, buy or cook only what you need for the week.
Search for the best prices. Check the newspaper, online or store coupons for sales. Look into loyalty cards for extra discounts at a local grocery store.
Be aware of convenience costs. Convenience foods, like frozen foods, ready to eat meals, and pre-cut produce, often cost more than if you were to prepare meals from home from scratch. Get back to the basics, it may take a little more time, but it can save a lot on the next grocery bill.
Look for generic store brands. Store brands usually cost less. Look at the shelves higher or lower than eye level to find them.
Focus on nutritious foods. You may be surprised how much you spend on packaged, processed snack foods that provide little to no nutrients to the diet. Choose fresh, unprocessed foods that will provide the most bang for the buck in terms of nutrition.
