Relief Techniques by Stress Type

Relief Techniques by Stress Type

Stress relievers work differently for different people. Often the techniques that don’t seem to work for a particular person are ineffective for one of two reasons: either they are a poor match for the person's personality or for the situation.

Stress can be divided into the following categories, with corresponding relief techniques:

  • Acute Stress: The type of stress that throws you off-balance momentarily. Breathing exercises, cognitive reframing, progressive muscle relaxation and mini-meditation may help you with acute stress.
  • Chronic Stress: The type of stress that tends to occur on a chronic basis. Effective stress relievers include regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, cultivating supportive relationships and regular meditation.
  • Emotional Stress: The type of stress that comes from a conflicted relationship, for example. Try journaling, talking to a friend, listening to music, practicing mindfulness and/or talking with a therapist.
