Holiday Travel Tips

Millions of people travel during the holiday season every year. Many find that while holiday travel is worth it, unusual stressors may come up, such as delayed flights or increased traffic. Increased spending can also be a concern for many.

Here are a few tips for easing stress and improving your mental health while traveling for the holidays.

  • Plan for the weather. Be ready for adverse weather conditions by packing essential items like snow chains for your vehicle and an emergency kit. Also be sure to check for potential flight delays. Being prepared for various weather conditions helps you stay on track and reduces travel stress.

  • Make a packing list. Create a detailed packing list ahead of time to ensure you don't forget important items. Consider wrapping gifts after arriving at your destination to save space in your luggage and prevent damage to your presents during travel. Ensuring you have everything you need will help reduce stress and help ease any anxiety you may feel.

  • Have a backup plan. Prepare a secondary plan for your travel arrangements in case of unexpected disruptions such as delays or cancellations. This could include alternative routes, backup transportation options or a list of nearby accommodations, to ensure you're prepared for any unforeseen changes.

  • Continue to take care of yourself. Remembering to care for yourself by staying active and eating well is important to ease stress and improve your wellbeing. Take advantage of the new scenery and go for a hike or walk around the neighborhood to look at Christmas lights.

  • Develop a financial plan. Travel expenses can add up quickly. Creating a budget before the busy season hits means your spending process will go smoother, and you will have ample time to pay bills. Having a financial plan will also give you peace of mind throughout the holiday season.

  • Travel wisely. Compare flights and look for deals well in advance. If travel doesn’t fit in your budget this year, opt to stay home instead. Celebrating from home still allows you to enjoy old traditions and create new ones with loved ones.
