Self-Care Tips for Dad

Although he might not admit it, the father figure in your life is likely to feel pulled in many directions. Men today feel plenty of pressure to give their all at work while meeting the needs of their partners, children and extended family.

Father’s Day on Sunday, June 20th provides the opportunity not just to thank all of the dads you know, but also advocate that each one take care of his emotional wellbeing. Here are some easy ways to encourage self-care:

  • Spend Time Together. Whether you are living at home or not, spending quality time with your dad can make all the difference to his day. Participating in activities he enjoys such as golfing, fishing or even watching his favorite show can make him feel appreciated and special. Showing interest in your dad’s hobbies can also help grow your relationship.

  • Give Dad His Own Time. As much as you need Dad to kill the spider in the bathroom, take care of the yard or listen to what’s going on in your life, it can be easy to forget that our fathers are humans and need breaks too. Taking on a chore or two of his will give Dad time to himself, help him relax and reduce his anxieties.

  • Offer Stress Relievers. Sometimes Dad gets too preoccupied to take time for himself. Making him a healthy meal, going for a walk or run together or gifting him with a calming massage gives him the chance to unwind and enjoy himself. You may even help him find a new way to cope with stress.
