Being a More Mindful, Caring Traveler

With winter soon coming to an end, thanks to Puxatawny Phil, many people may be gearing up for some springtime travel. However, most people may not consider the ways that their travel can help them give back to the communities in which you’re traveling to! Here are some great tips to spread some kindness and give back on your upcoming trips:

  1. Show Some Respect to the Locals – Respect should always go without saying but make it an extra initiative of yours to learn about the place(s) you are visiting. Learn about the local area, any traditions they may have or certain taboos. Always ask permission even for something as simple as taking a photo of a person or certain place. The last thing you want to do while traveling, especially if you are abroad, is to offend someone. A greeting with a wave in one part of the world may be considered a sign of disrespect in another.

  2. Connect with the Locals – Along with showing respect, you can always take it a step further and see if you can learn any of the local languages. Surprise some of the natives by having a conversation with them in their own language and share stories, ideas or your gratitude for having them share their culture and home with you. If you don’t have the time to study up enough to hold a conversation, simply learning some key phrases such as “please”, “thank you” and basic questions can go a long way to helping you have a more pleasurable trip.

  3. Shop Local – Like anywhere, local businesses can always use your business. Take some time before setting off on your adventure to learn about local shops, restaurants, tour guides and marketplaces. Nothing helps a community grow than being able to keep the revenue their city or town generates.

  4. Show Compassion, Especially to Fellow Travelers – Traveling can be very stressful. From ensuring you have all the necessities, to making flights on time, waiting in long lines and the inevitable delays – anyone can get stressed. Instead of getting frustrated at these types of situations, see if you can spread some kindness. Help that traveler with their bags, give some directions if you’re asked and always be sure to thank any staff that help you along your journey. Showing kindness and making someone smile can go a long way in helping alleviate stress for all those around you during your travels.
