Prioritizing self-care is important for maintaining mental, physical and emotional balance. According to mental health professionals, journaling is one of their most recommended tools. Studies have proven that writing down your thoughts can lead to an increase in wellbeing and happiness. This stress management technique is not about keeping a diary of what is happening in your life. Instead, journaling is a way to express your thoughts, feelings and emotions regarding your life’s experiences by writing them down on paper. Doing so allows you to gain a greater sense of understanding, promotes self-reflection and helps clear your thoughts. The opportunity to free your mind in this way is especially useful for finding a sense of calm during stressful or difficult times.

To begin your journey into the world of journaling, these tips and tricks will help you get started:

Find Your Journal – there’s no need to break the bank on fancy supplies. A simple notepad or notebook, a document on your computer or the “notes” function on your smartphone – all are equal when it comes to journaling. Focus on what’s most comfortable and easiest to start writing.

Find a Routine – carving out a set time every day to journal will help you turn it into a habit. Spend a few minutes first thing in the morning , over your lunch break or as a way to wrap up the day before bed. Setting a 5-minute timer is a great way to start.
