Being There For Your People

With everything going on, it is important to always check in with your friends. Checking in requires a little thought and planning. But with a solid strategy in place, you can support those around you while keeping your own wellbeing in mind. A little bit goes a long way and initiating you care and want to understand is the most important thing.

Follow the tips below to start taking the first steps:

  1. Start with a text. Starting the conversation can be the hardest part. When in doubt, start with a simple text such as "Hey Friend, I hope you're taking care of yourself!" This, followed by a smile or heart emoji, shows that you are there and always in their corner.

  2. Validate. When trying to be there for a friend, we can sometimes try to focus too much on finding the right thing to say. The key is listening and validating what your friend is saying. Validation is the showing your friend you care and understand.

  3. Make a plan. Being there for someone isn't just a one-time event. Focus on making a plan to check in with your friend on a regular basis. Making the effort over a period of time helps to mentally boost your friend's self-esteem and shows you are in it for the long run.

  4. Protect your own energy. Taking care of yourself allows the ability to be a better form of support for everyone around you. It is great to be there for your friends but if we are putting their needs before our own, we will burn out. Make sure you are investing in yourself by creating healthy habits such as writing in a journal or meditating!
