Realistic Self-Love Habits You Can Start Today

We are often our toughest critic, but we deserve to be treated with the same kindness and respect that we give others.

How can we start showing ourselves love and kindness?

Aim for 8 hours of sleep. Sleep is one of the most basic human needs. Without quality sleep, we put ourselves at risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, obesity and depression. Carving out enough time for sleep can be the greatest act of self-love.

Replace negative thoughts. First, identify toxic thoughts. Second, acknowledge and validate the thought. Third, replace the thought with a new, positive one.

Journal every morning. Seeing your thoughts on paper is a great way to help you become more aware of them. It's also a great way to look inward when you spend much of your day pouring energy out. It only takes five minutes each day - you can write about anything that you appreciate - big or small. It allows your mind to focus on the positive.

Fill your plate with foods that nourish your mind and body. Get more from your meals by eating a balanced diet of foods that provide premium fuel to your body and brain. Consider a plant-based diet that's rich in fruits and vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables and berries. Also consider fish and other types of seafood, which have been tied to improved cognitive function.

Find physical activity that feels like a reward, not a punishment. If you dread exercising, you're less likely to do it. You need to find a version of physical activity that makes you feel good and that you look forward to.

Take social media breaks. We spend much of our day seeking affirmation from others on social media. Taking a break from your phone and/or social media allows you to spend more time in the moment and with your own thoughts.
