Social Anxiety

Social anxiety is a mental health disorder categorized by an intense fear of being watched and judged by others. Someone with social anxiety has a hard time doing everyday things; such as meeting new people, using a public restroom, answering a question and talking to people in public. The extreme fear and anxiety surrounding these situations that may be routine for others is so strong that it affects work, school and friends. Social anxiety is a common disorder that impacts approximately seven percent of Americans.

If you are experiencing the following signs and symptoms in public situations, you may have social anxiety:

  • Blushing, sweating, trembling, increased heart rate, and other physical symptoms

  • Feeling nauseous or sick

  • Avoiding eye contact and speaking in a soft tone

  • Having a difficult time talking to people, especially those you don’t know

  • Feeling self-conscious, embarrassed, or awkward

  • Having an intense fear of being humiliated

  • Avoiding activities that involve other people, even if they are something you enjoy

Seek help from a mental health professional if you notice yourself experiencing these problems and if social anxiety is getting in the way of your day to day life.
