How to Stick With Your New Year’s Resolutions

Have you ever told yourself that THIS is the year that you’re going to keep your New Year’s resolution? Have you ever told yourself that and then never actually stuck through with it? Well, if you have you are not alone as over 80% of people fail every year in keeping their resolution. Compare that to just 8% of people sticking with it for the entire year and it’s no wonder the gym always seems to clear up in less than a month.

This year, however, set yourself up for success as just a few simple tips and tricks can help you stay on track and finish the year achieving your goals:

  1. Start small: Many people love to set goals for themselves that are not easy to accomplish. No matter how hard you try, it might not be possible to cut out chocolate entirely or going to the gym every day. Starting with resolutions like that can lead you to failure. Instead, start off with a resolution like “I will only have 1 piece of chocolate per day” or just try to get to the gym at least 2-3 times a week to start.

  2. Make changes one at a time: No matter how hard you try, changing your typical behaviors is going to take time. The best thing you can do is to not get overwhelmed with everything you WANT to accomplish and instead focus on one small step at a time and how that can help you reach your final goal. Is your goal to lose 30 pounds by the summer? Try changing it up and set a goal to lose 2 pounds every week. The shorter time-frame can help show you results faster, which can keep you motivated for the long-run.

  3. Share: No, this does not mean to post about your workouts every day on social media. Simply put, having someone to talk to about your struggles or successes with keeping up with your resolution can help keep you on track.

  4. Know that it’s okay to slip up: You can try every single one of the above tips/tricks and even still, you may slip up. But that’s okay! Just because you fall behind one day, week or so on doesn’t mean you should give up. Your efforts are never in vain so keep trying throughout the year!
