How To Become More Resilient

There is only so much one individual can do with how much they can take mentally and physically, but there are techniques you can use to increase how resilient you are when times are tough. The way we perceive a situation can make all the difference. Try these techniques to help reshape the negative thoughts that may come up in stressful situations:

  1. Use positive affirmations. The more you say something, the more you will think it is true. Think about the thoughts or behaviors you would like to change. After that, come up with a short statement that empowers you to think or behave in the opposite manner. 
  2. Catch and release negative thoughts. Ask yourself if these thoughts are beneficial and what triggered these thoughts. Try not to focus on the one thing you may have not done right. Instead, think about all the things you have done successfully, even the little things. There is a high likelihood that you do way more things right than wrong.
  3. Look at mistakes as ways to learn. No one likes being wrong or making a mistake, but everyone does it. The difference comes from how you respond to the situation. Take these opportunities to learn and progress as an individual, not to bring yourself down.
  4. Practice gratitude. In the society we live in of always wanting more, we have to take a step back to really analyze what is important to us. What is your motivation for what you do?  What gets you out of the bed in the morning? If you focus on what truly matters to you and what you do have instead of what you don’t, you will be much happier on a regular basis.
